On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024) is a black comedy-drama film written and directed by Rungano Nyoni, featuring Susan Chardy, Elizabeth Chisela, and Henry B.J. Phiri. An international co-production between Ireland, the UK, the U.S., and Zambia, it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 16 May 2024. The film was released in the UK and Ireland in December 2024, and in the U.S. in March 2025. After Shula discovers her uncle’s body on a deserted road, funeral preparations bring out hidden tensions and buried secrets within her middle-class Zambian family.
