On May 29, 1953, a New Zealander named Edmund Hillary and his climbing partner, Tenzing Norgay, became the first to reach the highest point on earth - the summit of Mount Everest. Edmund was a beekeeper from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay was a Nepalese Sherpa.
