I have named this photo ‘Colour Contrast.’ This picture was taken somewhere in Rajasthan during our nine-day journey through the deserts, palaces, and havelis of the state. If I am correct, this is a Gulmohar tree. Contrast is a technique used differently in photography, films, and literature. One striking example of contrast that I remember is from the movie Schindler’s List by Steven Spielberg. The “girl in the red coat” scene in Schindler’s List takes place during the brutal liquidation of the Kraków ghetto, where a single little girl in a red coat is seen walking through the chaos. The scene is shot in stark black and white, making the red coat the only splash of colour, which draws the audience’s attention and is symbolic of innocence, individual lives lost, and the world’s indifference to the atrocities.
