LitRadar - July 1, 2026 - Sunhil Sippy’s Vanishing Mumbai: A Photographic Memory of a Changing City

In his first solo exhibition, Eastward: Explorations Along Mumbai’s Eastern Seaboard, photographer Sunhil Sippy documents Mumbai’s rapidly changing eastern waterfront through photographs taken over twelve years. Instead of focusing on the city’s familiar landmarks, he captures neglected spaces—abandoned factories, dockyards, mangroves, and crumbling industrial landscapes—revealing how nature gradually reclaims these forgotten places. Originally a filmmaker and advertising professional, Sippy discovered photography through long walks that became both a creative and meditative practice. His images are not merely documentary records but visual memories that preserve the atmosphere and history of places on the verge of disappearing. Eastward is ultimately a poignant reflection on urban transformation, memory, and the importance of preserving the overlooked stories of a city in constant transition.
