Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner ‘Flee’, the animated documentary follows Amin, a gay Afghan refugee living in Copenhagen, who shares his traumatic journey with his longtime friend and director Jonas Poher Rasmussen. Through elegant animation and archival footage, the film recounts Amin’s escape from Kabul after the Soviet withdrawal, the murder of his father, his family’s perilous migration through Moscow and across the Baltic, and the separation that forced him to claim he was an orphan to gain asylum in Denmark. This lifelong lie leaves him burdened with survivor’s guilt despite his family’s safety in Sweden. The documentary also touches on his discovery of his gay identity, presenting a deeply moving exploration of memory, displacement, identity, and the emotional cost of survival.
