2.1 - Nine Gold Medals - David Roth - Lesson Summary

“Nine Gold Medals” is a poem by American poet David Roth.

It is based on a 100-metre race at the Special Olympics in 1976.

Young athletes from around the world came to take part in the event.

They trained hard for many months before the race.

The crowd eagerly waited to cheer for the runners.

As the race began, one of the youngest runners fell down and cried.

The other eight runners stopped instead of continuing the race.

They returned and helped the fallen runner stand up.

All nine runners walked together towards the finish line.

They all won gold medals, showing compassion, unity, and sportsmanship.
